Shopify: when it's the right ecommerce platform, when to skip it.
Shopify is the default ecommerce platform for DTC, SMB, and most modern brands. Fastest to launch, deepest app ecosystem, broadest payment support. The trap is the per-app + payment fee + theme work stack that quietly doubles your sticker subscription. Here's the honest read on what Shopify is genuinely good at, the all-in cost, and when WooCommerce or BigCommerce wins.
Use it for these. Don't use it for those.
Most "best ecommerce platform" lists are partner-driven. We don't run any partner program. Here's the honest cut on Shopify and what genuinely beats it.
It's the right ecommerce platform for these jobs.
- You're a DTC brand, SMB retailer, or modern ecommerce business launching new. Fastest path from idea to live store with checkout that actually converts.
- You need the broadest app ecosystem — reviews, subscriptions, returns, loyalty, fulfillment. Shopify's 10,000+ app store has solutions for every workflow.
- You want to take payments without a developer. Shopify Payments handles cards, Apple Pay, Shop Pay, BNPL with one toggle. The 0.5% surcharge for using a third-party processor disappears.
- You sell across channels — online store, Instagram, TikTok, Amazon, retail POS. Shopify's omnichannel sync is best-in-class for SMB.
- You're scaling toward $5M–$50M revenue and need Shopify Plus's enterprise features (B2B, Functions, custom checkout, multi-store).
Pick something else for these.
- You're under $50K/yr and pre-validated. Shopify Starter at $5/mo or just selling via Instagram/Square handles you better while you find PMF.
- You're a content site or service business that wants to add ecommerce. WooCommerce on WordPress fits better; Shopify forces you to migrate your CMS.
- You're B2B with complex pricing, custom catalogs, or large multi-line orders. BigCommerce or a B2B-native platform handles this better than Shopify Plus B2B.
- You need ultra-deep customization of checkout or backend logic. Shopify locks the checkout above Plus tier; WooCommerce gives you full code control at any tier.
- You sell in highly regulated categories (firearms, CBD in some states, controlled substances). Shopify's content policies are strict; vertical-specific platforms exist.
"Shopify subscription is $79/mo on paper. We're paying $650/mo all-in — apps for reviews, subscriptions, email, returns, advanced inventory. Plus 0.5% on every transaction because we're not on Shopify Payments. That's the real number nobody tells you up front."

What it actually costs at SMB scale.
Shopify's sticker price is the floor. The real bill is sticker + payment fees + 5–15 apps + theme work + Shopify Email/SMS overage. Most operators land at 4–8× the subscription price all-in. Here's the honest math.
Real all-in for a typical $50K/mo DTC brand on Shopify ($105) + Klaviyo ($150) + reviews app ($30) + subscriptions app ($60) + returns app ($30) + theme work amortized ($50) + payment processing 2.9% on $50K ($1,450) = ~$1,875/mo, of which $475 is software. Same brand on WooCommerce: ~$1,625/mo (mostly payment fees). The Shopify premium is real but earns its keep on velocity for most operators.
What operators actually report.
Five limits operators run into.
Shopify's strengths are real. So are the friction points operators discover after launch.
The app stack quietly doubles your bill.
Reviews, subscriptions, returns, advanced inventory, email, SMS, popups, loyalty, fulfillment — most DTC brands run 5–15 paid apps. App spend regularly equals or exceeds the Shopify subscription itself. Audit quarterly; cut what you don't actively use.
Shopify Payments lock-in via 0.5–2% surcharge.
Use Stripe, PayPal, or any non-Shopify processor → Shopify charges a per-transaction surcharge on top of the processor's fee. The lock-in is structural and intentional. Most brands stay on Shopify Payments because the math doesn't work otherwise.
Theme work is more expensive than you'd expect.
Free themes are fine to launch. Real customization — branded sections, custom landing pages, conversion optimization — runs $3K–$25K with a Shopify partner. Operators consistently underbudget theme work; budget 6 months of subscription as your first-year theme spend.
Headless or custom checkout requires Plus.
Want to build a custom storefront with Hydrogen, Next.js, or Astro? You need Plus for production-grade access. Want to customize the checkout itself? Plus only. Below Plus, you're working within Shopify's UX boundaries — fine for most, painful for some.
B2B features lag pure-play B2B platforms.
Shopify Plus B2B exists and works for simple wholesale. Complex pricing tiers, custom catalogs, large multi-line orders, NET 30 terms with credit checks — BigCommerce B2B Edition or a dedicated B2B platform handles these better. If B2B is more than 30% of revenue, evaluate alternatives seriously.
How to pick between Shopify, WooCommerce, and BigCommerce.
Three ecommerce platforms, three honest fits. Pick by ownership preference, business model, and B2B share.
Use Shopify.
DTC brands, SMB retailers, modern ecommerce. Fastest launch, best app ecosystem, omnichannel sync. The right call for the vast majority of new ecommerce businesses.
Use WooCommerce.
You already run WordPress. You want full code control, no monthly platform fee, no transaction surcharge. Trade-off: you own hosting, security, plugin maintenance, and uptime.
Use BigCommerce.
B2B-heavy revenue, complex pricing, large catalogs (10K+ SKUs), multi-channel enterprise. Better B2B features than Shopify Plus, no transaction fees on any processor, similar pricing to Shopify Advanced.
Where Shopify fits in your build.
Shopify is the ecommerce store substrate. These are the blueprints from our library where Shopify is the source of truth, the trigger, or the destination for ecommerce automation.
Post-purchase nurture
Order confirmed in Shopify → triggers post-purchase sequence in Klaviyo. Review request, cross-sell, replenishment reminders, win-back. The DTC revenue compounding flow.
CS · ONBOARDINGCustomer onboarding sequence
First-time buyer triggers welcome series, brand story, product education. Repeat buyer flows differently. Shopify customer tags drive segmentation.
ECOM · INVENTORYInventory sync
Master SKU table syncs to Shopify and other channels. Low-stock alerts, supplier triggers, reorder points. Multi-location inventory orchestrated from one source.
GROWTH · REVIEWSReview collection
Order fulfilled → review request via email + SMS at the right post-delivery moment. Shopify + Yotpo or Loox is the standard ecommerce review stack.
FINANCE · BILLINGRecurring billing orchestration
Subscription products via Recharge or Shopify Subscriptions. Automated renewals, dunning, churn save offers, payment method updates. The DTC subscription engine.
MARKETING · ADSPaid ads reporting dashboard
Shopify orders sync to Meta, Google, TikTok ad pixels. Server-side conversion tracking via CAPI. ROAS attribution across channels rolled up to a single dashboard.
CS · RETENTIONCustomer health / churn monitor
Predictive segments — high CLV, declining order frequency, at-risk subscribers. Shopify order data feeds the model; Klaviyo or your CRM handles outreach.
CRM · LEAD CAPTURELead intake to CRM
Wholesale and B2B inquiries from your Shopify store land in CRM with full enrichment. Sales follows up; B2B price tier auto-applied on approval.
SALES · FOLLOW-UPFirst-touch sequence
Browse abandonment, abandoned cart, post-checkout abandonment — three triggered flows that account for most ecommerce email revenue. Shopify events drive all three.
OPS · REPORTINGReporting dashboards
Shopify Analytics is fine. Shopify + Triple Whale, Polar, or Looker Studio is better. Real-time revenue, channel breakdown, customer cohorts, product margin.
